ABSTRACT

Principled quality assessment methods are necessary for evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the content retargeting techniques we have presented so far in this book. In a perfect world with unlimited time and resources, we would assess the quality of a new retargeting method by designing and performing subjective studies utilizing tried and tested experimental protocols. The main advantage of relying on test subjects is, that instead of devising algorithms for assessing quality, we can utilize the subjects’ mental faculties and simply explain to them how we would like them to judge quality. For most real-world scenarios, however, subjective experiments are not practical to execute for reasons we discuss later (Section 6.2).
