Pavalko (1971, 18-26) stated that there are several factors that characterize professional occupations and distinguish them from other forms of work. These characteristics include that the profession is based on a systematic body of theory and abstract knowledge, the work is related to the realization of basic social values, and that a considerable amount of education and training is required to enter the profession. The training is ideational, symbolic, and specialized; those who enter the profession are motivated by a primary emphasis on service to clients and the public.
