ABSTRACT
Abstract: This chapter presents an overview on six surface coal production methods and equipments used. Unit operations in both cyclic and continuous systems are introduced. Emphasis is given on shovel-truck combination and draglines as the main production machine for cyclic systems and bucket wheel excavators (BWE) as continuous mining systems in strip mining. Draglines and power shovels are also included as a cyclic system for inside dumping. Capacity calculations and corresponding equipment selections to satisfy the required production rate are also presented. Moreover, dozers and graders are covered as auxiliary equipments in surface coal mines.
