ABSTRACT

Carbon management is a critical aspect of the coal industry because coal releases the most carbon dioxide (CO2) per unit of energy generated. In 2011, the combustion of coal resulted in the release of 13.7 Gt of CO2, while the combustion of oil and gas released 11.1 and 6.3 Gt of CO2, respectively. Because of its high carbon content, coal contributes around 44% of global CO2 emissions (International Energy Agency 2013).
