ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a major chronic metabolic disorder afflicting as much as 2% of the population worldwide. In the U.S. alone, approximately 5 to 6% of the population or about 14 million people have currently been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, the leading cause of blind­ ness, amputation, renal failure, and a significant contributor to the development of heart disease and stroke. Nutrition therapy is a central focus of treatment.
