ABSTRACT

The Baseline, Analyze or Assess, Suggest Solutions, Implement, Check, and Sustain (BASICS) model was constructed to provide a practical guide to approaching a Lean implementation. The main objective was to present an easy-to-use roadmap in which the terminology helps guide the users on what should be occurring as leader move through the roadmap. The BASICS Lean system implementation approach is based 50% on the principles of scientific management, developed primarily by Frank Gilbreth and taught by Dr. Shigeo Shingo, and 50% on change management. This approach is utilized to convert processes from batch to one-piece flow. A truly Lean organization embodies the people aspect of Lean culture, which generates and implements ideas, daily, from the frontline employees or team members. When trying to assess customer satisfaction, the Kano model, developed in 1980s by Professor Noriaki Kano, can offer some insights, as it provides a 2-D model to understand the linear relationship of what organization does versus customer-perceived value or importance.
