ABSTRACT

The Holy Grail of Lean is standard work. Without standard work, there can be no real sustainable improvement, flexibility, or guarantee of quality. Standard work must be the foundation of every process throughout the organization to create a continuous improvement environment. Behind, or underneath, standard work are job breakdown instructions with detailed steps and times so anyone can perform the work. The training within industry (TWI) method was developed by the Bureau of Training for the War Manpower Commission in 1944. It clearly is designed with training the teacher in mind and it incorporates many excellent teaching methods. Job instruction (JI) creation of the job breakdown steps is the root of standard work. Standardized work is such an important part of the education and training theory that it cannot be overstated. Job relations are targeted to the foundations of participative management. They are broken down into good employee relations and how to handle problems.
