ABSTRACT

Total productive maintenance (TPM) is a combination of: preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance, and participative management/employee involvement resulting in a productive maintenance program carried out by all employees. TPM involves everyone in the organization, from top management to the team member on the floor. With TPM, the team members share in the maintenance and upkeep of the equipment and complete day-to-day checklists, and the maintenance team ensures that the complex items are completed to support operation schedules. The six big losses in a factory are: equipment failure, setup and adjustment, idling and minor stoppage, reduced speed, defect in process, and reduced yield. Process capability is the measure of the inherent reproducibility of the product produced by a process. The goal of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is to take metrics that individually might look good and multiply them together. The best way to start TPM is by creating simple checklists for just one pilot piece of equipment.
