ABSTRACT

The human factor represents a key aspect in global security. Without human participation or intervention, the security practices covered in this book (Chapter 7), the innovative technologies (Chapter 8), or even risk assessment techniques (Chapter 9) would not be attainable or successful. The reality in daily security practices is that it takes humans to operate technologies, comply with security regulations, and provide the primary input in sophisticated risk assessment software, algorithms, and metrics. In numerous cases of security incidents, it is the human factor that seems to determine the outcome of a threat, from the well-trained airline crew who manage to avert their plane from hijacking to the efficient cruise line seafarers who manage to evacuate a ship with thousands of pirates.
