ABSTRACT

Design issues are at the root of most waste, and accessing this aspect of waste prevention often involves process reengineering that goes beyond the adjustments to flow that are usually key to Lean improvements. The purpose of collecting process data in Lean work is partially to calculate the cost-effectiveness of this reengineering. Ideally, process redesign is an opportunity to simplify processes, or to eliminate some aspect of the process that causes waste. Many different approaches may be available.
