5.1 INTRODUCTION 5.1.1 RETICULAR PATTERN IN DERMOSCOPY IMAGES Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that accounts for approximately 1.6% of the total number of cancer cases worldwide [1]. In the fight against this type of cancer, early detection is a key factor: if detected early, before the tumor has penetrated the skin (noninvasive melanoma or melanoma in situ), the survival rate is 98%, falling to 15% in advanced cases (invasive melanoma), when the tumor has spread (metastasized) [2].
