ABSTRACT

THE FIVE EXAMPLES IN THIS CHAPTER are actual narratives of how P-M analysis was used successfully to reduce chronic defects in a manufacturing operation.

CASE 1: CORRECTING OD VARIATION ON A CYLINDRICAL GRINDER (NACHI-FUJIKOSHI) Among all hydraulic valve components, the spool is especially difficult to manufacture in a way that fully meets precision requirements. Cylindrical grinders are used on the outside of these spools, and the grinding tolerances are very strict. When grinding tapered surfaces, operators were frequently forced to adjust the table angle in compensation. As a result, the automated grinders could not could not be exploited to their fullest potential. Assigning an operator to stand by for these adjustments lowered productivity.
