ABSTRACT

A number of types ofadditives are used in typical lubricating oils. These include antioxidants, metal corrosion inhibitors, dispersants, detergents, pour point depressants, viscosity index improvers, rust inhibitors, antifoam agents, and extreme pressure and antiwear agents. These additives, which comprise about 20% of a typical commercial motor oil formulation,

have itnportant functions, but the properties of the base oil cannot be neglected, properties such as viscosity and stability that can limit a lubricant's usefulness (Pritzker, 1945).
