ABSTRACT

Introduction The central idea of this book is that the proper goal for progress on the African continent is sustainable human development and that good governance is required to achieve this goal. Sustainable policies and actions meet current needs without compromising the ability to meet future needs. Human development seeks economic growth in the context of equal opportunity and social justice. It is concerned with the well-being and rights of a country’s citizens just as much as the growth of standard national economic indicators. Good governance is a process of political rule that is participatory, transparent, inclusive, responsive, and guided by the rule of law. In the absence of good governance, countries are unlikely to have the building blocks of sustainable human development, such as strong education systems, healthcare infrastructure, and resistance to corruption.
