ABSTRACT

When you look at independent professionals as a group, more than half are over the age of 35 and the largest cohort (more than 45%) are over the age of 45. For many, it is because they built up a lifetime of skills and contacts, and then parleyed that into income. However, the fastest growing segment of the self-employed population these days is in the 20-to 34-year age range. This group, which represents the millennial generation, has shown a strong interest in entrepreneurship and independent work, not as a career capstone but as an intentional lifelong earning practice.
