ABSTRACT

In oriental medicine, four diagnostic methods are applied for further clarification of the nature of a disease. They are

1. Inspection (望) 2.Listening and olfaction (聞) 3. Inquiry (問) 4.Palpation (切)

Inspection is an important method of obtaining information about the patient being examined. It includes observing the patient’s facial appearance and behavior, colors and qualities of various areas of the body and excretions, and most importantly the color and properties of the patient’s tongue.
