ABSTRACT

This chapter examines various cardiovascular concepts. Aberrant left pulmonary artery occurs due to the failure of formation of the sixth aortic arch. Blood under arterial pressure enters a tear in the intima and tracks along in the media. Cardiac myxoma is the most common primary cardiac tumour of adulthood. Most common childhood cardiac tumour, mostly diagnosed incidentally (usually asymptomatic) at <1 year of age is cardiac rhabdomyoma. Aspergillosis refers to a spectrum of abnormalities caused by infection with the Aspergillus fungus. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) usually occurs in the context of chronic asthma or cystic fibrosis. Bronchiolar and peribronchiolar inflammation of the bronchioles leads to submucosal and peribronchiolar fibrosis. Carcinoid tumours are neuroendocrine tumours with low malignant potential; overall prognosis is good. Bacterial pneumonia is most common, though TB infection is the most common worldwide. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare interstitial lung disease that is more common in non-smoking women of child-bearing age.
