ABSTRACT

A dog trained to perform olfactory surveillance to locate target odor may generally be referred to by many different names including detection dog, sniffer dog, scent discrimination canine, and other discipline-specific names (Lorenzo et al. 2003). Some believe that this type of usage dates back to their operation as hunting dogs 12,000 years ago (Davis and Valla 1978), but others suggest that this may date back to the Paleolithic period (Shipman 2015).
