ABSTRACT

While research on canine scent detection has been advancing, and the capabilities of dogs to distinguish various types of odors has been found to have forensic, medical, environmental, and other applications, the question remains as to what the dogs are actually smelling, what chemicals their highly attuned olfactory systems recognize in such small quantities.
