ABSTRACT
The semiconductor laser is now by far the most commonly used laser type, with several millions now
being produced every month. It is also the most versatile laser type, allowing a variety of performance
parameters to be optimized for specific applications: For example, the lasing wavelength can be tailored
by the use of different materials and compositions, the spectral properties can be optimized, and lasers
can be designed for high power levels.
