ABSTRACT

An indirect small area or domain estimator uses values of the variable of interest from a domain and/or time period other than the domain and time period of interest (Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology 1993). The indirect small area estimations (SAEs) rely on different statistical or geographic models to produce estimates for all small areas. Once the model is chosen, whether it is statistical or geographic, its parameters are estimated using the data obtained from the sample survey. However, for the geographic models, microdata should be generated at small area levels to estimate the model parameters. An important issue in indirect SAE is that additional auxiliary information or covariates are needed and how to take full advantage of those covariates.
