ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader to a key contemporary problem: the allocation of maintenance and rehabilitation (MR) to sustain a network of infrastructure assets in good condition. The ideas of this chapter can be extended to account for environmental pollution, user’s safety, cost and travel time, among others. Abrief indication of how to achieve this is provided at the end of this chapter. However, to simplify the concepts, I choose to concentrate the explanation for roads, specifically pavements. The rest of this book concentrates on explaining how to structure the problem and illustrates one possible way of solving it.
