ABSTRACT

Isotropic structures are those where the material has infinite symmetry. That is, the material properties are assumed to be the same in all directions. In other words, an isotropic material system is the simplest of the material systems and it needs only two mechanical properties, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio, to completely characterize the material system. In this chapter, we will present the wave propagation characteristics in 1D structures made of isotropic material; most metals fall under this category.
