ABSTRACT

The next decade or so will prove a very interesting time, when photons as information carriers will be far more important than electrons or holes. By this statement I do not mean the photon information carriers we are already well acquainted with, radio waves, since these low-energy electromagnetic waves are already predominant. I mean the transfer of information within electronic circuits themselves! Photons have many properties that make them far more suitable as information carriers, within large-scale integrated circuits, than either electrons or holes.
