ABSTRACT

Introduction A safety study was undertaken to examine the effects of introducing drilling on an offshore platfonn from which previously only production had taken place. The purpose of the study was to highlight any potential difficulties and solutions before commencing drilling operations, so that any necessary modifications could be made to ensure safe operation. The HAZOP identified that effective communications between the drilling crew and the production crew would play an important part in safety. This would not only mean introducing new tools and equipment, as well as extra members of personnel, but would also entail the integration of another team of workers into the already existing platform person nel structure. It would also therefore entail consideration of the potential for conflicting goals and objectives and perhaps different sets of safety priorities .
