Intercalation is the (totally or partially) reversible occupation by a foreign species - called the " intercalate" - of a host solid lattice. In general , the solid swells during the reaction but retains some of its essential structural characteristics, such as the layer structure in graphite or the spherical shape of the molecules in C60.
