ABSTRACT

For a number of years shock tubes have been used at A WE to study shock induced Richtmyer-Meshkov turbulent mixing. This is to investigate the mixing across the boundaries between gases of different densities induced by the passage of a shock. These studies have been variously reported at the International Workshops on the Physics of Compressible Turbulent Mixing (IWPCTM) [ 1 , 2, 3 , 4] . The experiments are used to validate turbulent mixing codes being developed at A WE. A conventional rectangular compressed air driven shock tube, cross section 200 x 1 00mm, has been used for these studies. The experiments are mainly investigating the effect on the mixing process of introducing a perturbation of one of the gas boundaries, these experiments are considered to be 2D on average.
