ABSTRACT

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) bridge the cyber world (e.g., information, communication, and intelligence) to the physical world through sensors and actuators. A CPS may consist of multiple static/mobile sensor and actuator networks integrated under an intelligent decision system [25]. Characteristic paradigms of such systems rely on an underlying communication network to transport data packets between sensors, computational units, and actuators [11]. Through closing the loop involving both the cyber world and the physical world, wireless ad hoc networking is one of the most critical concepts for building future CPS, which promises to revolutionize the way we interact with the physical world [26]. In particular, wireless ad hoc networks exploit the methodology of feedback, which has been recognized as the central element of control systems. Their advent has the potential to revolutionarily promote existing control applications by enabling an unprecedented degree of distributed cyber-physical control.
