ABSTRACT

The official activation of CODIS in October 1998* allowed participating public DNA laboratories to upload qualified DNA profiles developed from case evidence so that they could be shared among laboratories at the NDIS level. The original goal was to allow DNA profile searches of all of the CODIS criminal indices. In 2004-2005, MP/UD DNA profiles, including mtDNA, began to be added to CODISmp (a separate version from CODIS criminal indices-the mp stood for missing persons) for use in UHR investigations. CODIS is now available in all 50 states and in some foreign countries, and is provided to some international agencies; however, as explained in the previous chapter, it does not have share or cross-search capability with the records of all laboratories that test DNA.
