ABSTRACT

In order to fully appreciate the complexity of heart mechanics, one must have a basic understanding of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology. With the technological advancement and sophistication of cardiovascular imaging, there is a renewed interest in the mechanics of heart contraction and relaxation. Newer imaging approaches such as cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have made it possible to further explore these mechanisms in various cardiovascular disease states. However, prior to a more in-depth discussion of cardiovascular mechanics, we must first have a basic understanding of cardiovascular morphology and function.
