ABSTRACT

Historically, induction machines were mainly used as motors. Since its invention in the nineteenth century by Tesla, they have been the workhorses of the industry. This is because of their ruggedness and low maintenance. As a matter of fact, the three-phase system was invented to create rotating magnetic field that would spin the induction motor. Until the early 1970s, the induction generator was not commonly used because of its lack of excitation circuit. Thus, the generator is hard to use as a standalone system as it relies on external power sources to provide the needed magnetic field. In addition, the machine is hungry for reactive powers that would have to come from an external power source.
