ABSTRACT

The study relating the motion of physical systems and the forces causing them is called dynamics. The laws of physics governing this motion are the well-known Newton’s laws of motion. If the physical system under study is a structure, such as a tall building, an aircraft fuselage and wings, a car chassis, an industrial floor slab or a telecommunications mast, then the subject becomes structural dynamics. Of considerable importance is the oscillatory motion of a physical system about a certain equilibrium position. This is called vibration. Vibration analysis is the determination of the frequencies of the oscillations with respect to time, the relative positions of the various components of the physical system during its motion, and the amplitudes of the oscillatory motion of these components.
