THE M O U TH The oral pit (stomodeum) and proximal pharynx give rise to the mouth. In the adult, lips, cheeks, alveolar processes of the jaws, and the vestibule of the mouth are all stomodeal. The vestibule lined with ectoderm com­ municates with the oral cavity lined with endoderm. Other stomodeal derivatives are the nasal passages and palate (see Chapter 63), the pituitary adenohypophysis and the teeth.
