ABSTRACT
The neurocranium develops in a capsule o f lateral plate
m esoderm surrounding the em bryonic brain. Its vault
(calvaria) ossifies in m em brane. M uch o f the base (chondrocranium) ossifies in cartilage, but visceral m esoderm is contributed by pharyngeal arches I and II.
