ABSTRACT
It is pertinent, before beginning to design a piled foundation, to contemplate the underlying reasons why piles may be chosen as the supporting elements in that particular case. Some of the reasons advanced are related to engineering requirements, but others are concerned more with convenience and speed of action. These issues should not be confused and sheer expediency should not be allowed to override valid engineering requirements.
