ABSTRACT

The advan tage of on-l ine l i q u i d - s o l i d ex t rac t ion p rocedures for the p reconcen t ra t ion of o rgan ic c o m p o u n d s p r i o r to ana lys i s is that a la rge v o l u m e of s a m p l e is passed t h r o u g h a c o l u m n c o n t a i n i n g the adsorbent m a t e r i a l that adsorbs the organic c o m p o u n d s of interest. Subsequen t l y the organics i n the adsorbent ca r t r idge are deso rbed b y a r e l a t i ve ly s m a l l v o l u m e of a reagent or a so lvent w h i c h conta ins a n a p p r e c i a b l y e n r i c h e d concen t ra t ion of the organic c o m p o u n d s . T h i s is then p a s s e d in to the de tec t ion in s t rumen t . T h e de tec t ion l i m i t c an thereby be i m p r o v e d b y one to three orders of m a g n i t u d e . A l s o , the r e d u c t i o n i n s a m p l i n g h a n d l i n g i n this type of p rocedu re c a n cons ide rab ly reduce a n a l y t i c a l errors.
