ABSTRACT

W a s i k [1] has u s e d a n e l e c t r o l y t i c s t r i p p i n g c e l l to d e t e r m i n e h y d r o c a r b o n s i n seawater. D i s s o l v e d h y d r o c a r b o n s i n a k n o w n quan t i ty of s eawa te r w e r e e q u i l i b r a t e d w i t h h y d r o g e n b u b b l e s , e v o l v e d e lec t ro ly t i ca l ly f r o m a g o l d electrode, r i s i n g t h r o u g h a c y l i n d r i c a l ce l l . I n a n u p p e r h e a d s p a c e c o m p a r t m e n t of the c e l l , the h y d r o c a r b o n c o n c e n t r a t i o n i s d e t e r m i n e d b y gas c h r o m a t o g r a p h y . T h e ma jo r a d v a n t a g e s of t h i s c e l l are that the h y d r o c a r b o n s i n the u p p e r c o m p a r t m e n t are i n e q u i l i b r i u m w i t h the h y d r o c a r b o n s i n s o l u t i o n a n d that the h y d r o g e n u s e d as an ex t rac t ing so lven t does no t i n t roduce i m p u r i t i e s i n t o samples .
