ABSTRACT
Virtual work, as a concept, derives principally from the work of Jean Bernoulli in the early eighteenth century. When applied to a mechanical system (i.e. one in which the components do not distort), it is found that
the forces acting on a system in equilibrium do no nett work when the system suffers a small movement. This result is conditional on the forces not changing their magnitude or direction.
