ABSTRACT

Within a few years the radiation doses were reduced through the use of advanced technology and highly efficient instrument control. This work was headed by E.P. Slavskiy and later by G .V . Mishenkov and done by the engineering personnel of the plant and by researchers from RIAN, NII-9, IFKh, and other institutes. A considerable contribution to the elaboration of the technology was made by the workers of Plant B Central Laboratory (TsZL) N . G . Chemarin, V . I . Zemlyanukhin, V . M . Tarakanov, I.A. Ternovskiy, L . P . Sokhina, and Ya.P. Dokuchaev, to name but a few, and also by the designers of a special design bureau arranged at the plant under the guidance of Y u . N . Gerulyaitis, G .G. Popov, and S.N. Rabotnov. Later the technical design of the plant was subject to considerable changes. Its most complicated department No. 8 was replaced with new equipment installed in department No. 26 where the final product was a nitric acid solution of plutonium nitrate with a known content of impurities. Facilities were provided for the regeneration and purification of radionuclides from some chemical agents to allow their recycling, and measures were taken to reduce the disposal of radionuclides beyond the limits of the plant area.
