ABSTRACT

Formation of the Mg-base supersaturated solid solution and its decomposition are of great

importance for behaviour of M g - R E alloys during treatment and their properties. Ab i l i t y

to form supersaturated solid solution is connected with existence of the R E solubility in

solid M g and its decrease with lowering temperature. In accordance with this, the effect of

the solid solution decomposition and the resulting change of the alloy properties depend on

the solubility of the individual rare earth metals in solid M g . A l o n g with this aspect, decom-

position of the supersaturated solid solution in M g - R E alloys is interesting as a process in

solids from the scientific viewpoint. Decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution in

magnesium alloys with different rare earth metals is characterised by both similar and

different features.
