ABSTRACT

The socio-economic consequences of climatic conditions in urban areas are amplified by the altered hydrologic cycle that comes with urbanization and conversion of land use to impervious areas. These conditions put unique demands on the field of meteorology, and the need to incorporate meteorology into urban water management decision-making. This chapter outlines the applications of urban meteorology within the integrated urban water management (IUWM) framework, and provides some specific considerations with regard to the collection and use of meteorological data in the urban context. The user is also referred to local guidelines for specific information on measuring meteorological variables and selecting measurement equipment, for example.
