ABSTRACT

Groundwater is an important component of the urban water cycle, providing water supply, as well as impacting aquatic ecosystems (for example, by determining baseflow levels). At the same time, many other water cycle components and activities impact groundwater, such as the migration of pollution or the over-extraction of water. Despite these interactions and their potential consequences, groundwater tends often to be ‘forgotten’ in many monitoring programmes. This chapter discusses the interactions between groundwater and the urban water system and their implications for monitoring. It then outlines specific considerations for monitoring groundwater and finally presents an example of an integrated groundwater monitoring programme.
