ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the main issues that should be addressed in developing a monitoring programme to meet the needs of Integrated Urban Water Management (IUWM). It is not a step-by-step guide to setting up an IUWM monitoring programme, nor does it provide detailed specification of the design of monitoring components, such as installation of monitoring equipment. For advice on these issues, local guidelines (reflecting local availability of technology) should be consulted. Rather, this chapter provides an in-depth discussion of the main principles and issues that should be considered before the monitoring system is established.
