ABSTRACT
In the different studies and design activities, several surveys and analyses have been carried out on the passenger and freight traffic between Sicily and the Italian mainland focussed on the crossing of Messina Strait. The most recent studies, started in 2005, took into consideration all transport modes and all routes, with the following main objectives: - Building up a consistent data-set of past traffic trends and analysis of the
evolution of transport demand in the previous 10 years (1995-2005). - Analysing the current traffic demand between Sicily and the mainland. - Building up a comprehensive database on traffic supply and demand to
and from Sicily including all relevant characteristics. - Forecasting future traffic demand on the bridge in different transportation
and macro-economy scenarios by multi-mode computer models.
