ABSTRACT

Calculus, that powerful mathematical tool first developed by Isaac Newton and

Gottfried Leibnitz in the 1600s, has two basic formulations: differential and

integral. While both are important in the study of advanced mathematics, both are

also central to much of engineering analysis and are put to a range of very practical

tasks. In this and the next chapter the focus will be on integral calculus and the task

of finding areas under curves or volumes under a surface.
