ABSTRACT
Optimisation can be described as the problem of locating the best solution from a
wide range of possibilities – in other words, finding the value of x such that the
function f(x) is a maximum (or minimum). Whether it is a maximum or a minimum
is governed by the problem; for example, the maximum reliability of a system or
the minimum error in a model.
