Steel-concretecompositecolumnshavebeenwidelyusedinhigh-risecompositebuildings,bridgesandoffshorestructuresduetotheirhighstructuralperformance,suchashigh strength,highstiffness,highductilityandlargestrainenergyabsorptioncapacities.The typesofcompositecolumnsareshowninFigure10.1.Themostcommonlyusedcomposite columnsareconcrete-encasedcomposite(CEC)columnsasshowninFigure10.1a,rectangularconcrete-Šlledsteeltubular(CFST)columnsasillustratedinFigure10.1candcircular CFSTcolumnsasdepictedinFigure10.1d.ACECcolumnisformedbyencasingastructuralsteelI-sectionintoareinforcedconcretecolumn.Studshearconnectorsmaybewelded tothestructuralsteelsectiontotransferforcesbetweenthesteelsectionandtheconcrete.
