ABSTRACT
The expansion joint must be recognized as an integral part of any bridge structure and as such should be considered at an early stage in the design. If the expansion joint is carefully designed and detailed, properly installed by specialist operatives and given reasonable maintenance in service, there is no reason why it should not give troublefree performance for many years.
