ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT. The progress made in investigation and repair techniques of reinforced concrete structures has rapidly increased during the last decade and will continue to do so as the construction industry learns from past and present mistakes. The owner or party responsible for the maintenance of a reinforced concrete structure in 1989 now has ample and informed sources from where he may seek advice concerning the degree of existing deterioration and the likely rate of future failure. Surface coatings, whilst playing a vital role in protecting against original failure of the new structure or the on-going deterioration of the repaired structure, have had insufficient field. study to take into account the severe exposure in many parts of UK and overseas. This paper discusses the criteria needed before specification or use of any surface coating by considering several examples of different structures with different specific needs. Keywords: Carbonation, Deterioration, Phenolphthalein, Depassivation, Diffusion, Impregnation, Methylmethacrylate, Ethylene Copolymer, Siloxane, Cavitation.
