ABSTRACT

As the deterioration mechanisms of reinforced concrete slabs in service have been made clear, there is an increased interest in the usage of waterproof membranes for protection of concrete decks during both new construction of slabs and repair of pavements in Japan.(1) The waterproof membranes for protection of the concrete decks are exposed to more severe conditions than the linings used for repair of deteriorated concrete structures in both the internal environments, which are a severe traveling load of the spreader and the high-temperature at placing of hot asphalt concrete, and the external environments, which are the combination of distributed shear and peeling stresses and repeated crack opening into interaction surface between waterproofing layer and asphalt pavement under heavy moving traffic load in service.
